Amethyst is a favorite of many with its gorgeous purple hue. With its connections to royalty, it’s no mystery why so many love to wear it in beautiful pieces of jewelry!
Amethyst, the birthstone of February, with its deep purple color, is from the Greek word “amethystos” which means “remedy against drunkenness.” This ties in closely with the gem’s properties of keeping its wearer with “peace of mind” and “freedom from passion.” While amethysts were first said to cure alcohol addictions, they now protect from many forms of addictions and their symptoms. These include headaches, insomnia, arthritis, pain relief and circulatory system issues. All of these properties are reflected in the birthstone poem for February:
“The February born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they, the amethyst will wear.”*
